Practising Certificate

Section 22(1) of the Midwives Registration Ordinance (“the Ordinance”) (Cap. 162, Laws of Hong Kong) stipulates that a registered midwife cannot practise midwifery in Hong Kong unless she is a holder of a valid practising certificate issued by the Midwives Council of Hong Kong (“the Council”). Furthermore, pursuant to section 6(3)(b) of the Ordinance, the Council may direct the removal from the register of midwives (“the register”) of the name of any registered midwife who is not practising midwifery in Hong Kong.

A practising certificate is valid for a period not exceeding 3 years and ending on 31 December. Registered midwives are obligated to renew their practising certificates before the due date if they intend to continue to practise midwifery in Hong Kong.

To renew the practising certificate, the applicant is required to submit a signed declaration form stating that the she has/has not been convicted of a criminal offence punishable with imprisonment to the Central Registration Office and pay the prescribed fee for the practising certificate according to the payment methods set out at the back of the demand note before 31 December.

While the Secretariat of the Council takes the initiative to remind practising certificate holders 3 months before renewal is due by issuing demand notes and declaration forms to the correspondence addresses as provided by the registered midwives, the Council is not held responsible for any loss in post. Registered midwives should complete the “Application Form for Change of Address and/or Telephone Number(s)” and return it to the Central Registration Office if their addresses are changed. The form can be downloaded from this website.

Please note that the application for renewal of practising certificate could only be processed when both valid declaration form has been received and payment has been made. Please contact the Central Registration Office (Telephone number: (852) 2961 8654 / Email address: cro2@dh.gov.hk) if the declaration form and demand note have not been received before the due date of the practising certificate.

The holder of a current practising certificate may apply in writing to the Secretariat of the Council for a replacement copy if the original practising certificate is lost, destroyed or defaced. The application should be accompanied by a prescribed fee for the replacement copy.
